O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to the 100th round. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she experienced significant defeats in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put in the bottom three spots and bottom two and bottom two, respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. After two more breathtaking performance on September 7 2005, as O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two competitors, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspapers in the early morning would read O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the most youthful winner in the competition's time . O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
